The largest egg recall in US history hit in August, when two Iowa companies -- Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms -- recalled 550 million eggs potentially infected with salmonella. The eggs were linked to more than 1,900 cases of illness, according to the (CDC).
Just as the egg problems were mounting in July, the federal government instituted stricter egg safety rules. In December, Congress passed the Food Safety Modernization Act, which gives the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection and recall authority. The bill was presented to President Obama on December 29.
