J.K. Rowling's 'The Casual Vacancy' TV adaptation will premiere in the US this April

An American premiere date has been set for the TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling鈥檚 novel 鈥淭he Casual Vacancy.鈥澛
鈥淰acancy鈥 is being adapted by the BBC and stars actors Michael Gambon (who starred as Dumbledore in the 鈥Harry Potter鈥 film series), Rory Kinnear, and Keeley Hawes, among others, and is airing in the UK on Feb. 15. HBO has it will air the three-hour miniseries adaptation of the 2012 novel on April 29 and 30.聽
The book centers on the English town of Pagford, where a member of the parish council dies unexpectedly. The fight over who will replace him turns town residents against one another.聽
Monitor fiction critic Yvonne Zipp wrote of the book, 鈥淭he novel is satirical and pointed in its depiction of claustrophobic small-town English life鈥 as a satire of English village life, it's quite readable鈥 most of the teens are more vivid than their elders.鈥澛
Rowling is of course the author behind the 鈥淗arry Potter鈥 series, and has published the mysteries 鈥淭he Cuckoo鈥檚 Calling鈥 and 鈥淭he Silkworm,鈥 both of which focus on private investigator Cormoran Strike, under the pen name Robert Galbraith. (It wasn鈥檛 until after 鈥淐uckoo鈥 was published that it was revealed Rowling was behind the novel.) According to the , the author said last year that she鈥檚 planning at least six more books about the detective.聽
The author is also writing the screenplay for the upcoming film 鈥淔antastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,鈥 a book written by Rowling that鈥檚 set in the 鈥淧otter鈥 universe and is presented as if it鈥檚 a textbook used by Harry and his friends in class. According to the movie鈥檚 studio Warner Bros., 鈥淔antastic鈥 will be a trilogy and will center on the textbook鈥檚 fictional author Newt Scamander, who is an expert on magical animals.
