Are you still in the mood for a spooky story post-Halloween? Put down 鈥淭he Raven鈥 or 鈥The Shining鈥 鈥 booksellers have a different book for you.聽
In a of booksellers by industry newsletter Shelf Awareness, Shirley Jackson鈥檚 1962 novel 鈥淲e Have Always Lived in the Castle鈥 was the most-recommended. 鈥淐astle鈥 centers on the Blackwood family, who live in a big house near a village. Protagonist Merricat, her sister Constance, and her uncle Julian live there after the death of Merricat and Constance鈥檚 parents and other relatives. When Merricat and Constance鈥檚 cousin Charles arrives, the family鈥檚 lives are disrupted and long-buried secrets are revealed.
Jackson is often remembered for her short story 鈥淭he Lottery鈥 and is also the author of the novels 鈥淭he Haunting of Hill House鈥 and 鈥淭he Sundial鈥 as well as the memoir 鈥淟ife Among the Savages,鈥 among other work.
Jen Catlin of the San Diego and Redondo Beach, Calif. bookstore Mysterious Galaxy told Shelf Awareness, 鈥淭his story has haunted me for years. It is one of the most compellingly creepy stories I have ever read,鈥 while Tracy Wynne of the Rhinebeck, N.Y. bookstore Oblong Books and Music said of the novel, 鈥淛ackson was the master of creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere where her stories would unfold. Her writing makes you want to hold your breath until whatever聽that聽is has gone past your door.鈥
