'A World of Ice & Fire' delves into the world of 'Game of Thrones'
The new book 鈥淭he World of Ice & Fire,鈥� which details the background of the world in which the book series that is the basis for the TV show 鈥�Game of Thrones鈥� takes place, includes new material about author George R.R. Martin鈥檚 universe.
鈥淲orld鈥� was released today and is by Martin along with Elio M. Garcia Jr. and Linda Antonsson.聽
According to the , Martin said at a recent event about the book that 鈥渙ne of the hardest things about putting this book together was what to tell and what not to tell 鈥� because there are things I want to say in later novels.鈥� When the moderator, Laura Miller of Slate, compared 鈥淲orld鈥� to the work 鈥淭he Silmarillion鈥� by 鈥淟ord of the Rings鈥� author J.R.R. Tolkien and Martin said that Tolkien鈥檚 focus was world-building, while he likes creating his universe as he goes along.
The author also said that he also puts conflicting stories in his history, 鈥渏ust like in real history, with its different accounts鈥� even from court records and memoirs,鈥� according to the Guardian.
鈥淚n every epic fantasy, the world is a character,鈥� Martin said, according to .
He also credited his co-authors with attention to detail. Garcia and Antonsson are in charge of the 鈥淔ire鈥� fan website Westeros.org.
鈥淭hey displayed, right away, an almost obsessive knowledge of my world,鈥� Martin told . 鈥淚n fact, I had to alter my world because of that obsessive knowledge.鈥澛�
And yes, the next 鈥淔ire鈥� book, 鈥淭he Winds of Winter,鈥� is still forthcoming. According to the Guardian, Martin quipped during his event that the motto of House Martin would be 鈥淒eadline? What Deadline?鈥�
The TV show based on Martin鈥檚 books, 鈥淕ame of Thrones,鈥� concluded its fourth season this past June. 鈥淲inds鈥� will be the sixth book in Martin鈥檚 鈥淔ire鈥� series.
