National Book Award 2014 nominees for fiction, nonfiction, poetry and young people's literature are announced

Works that were nominated include 'The Innovators,' by Walter Isaacson and 'Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?' by Roz Chast for the nonfiction prize as well as 'All the Light We Cannot See,' by Anthony Doerr and 'Station Eleven,' by Emily St. John Mandel for the fiction award.

'All the Light We Cannot See' and 'Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?' are two of the nominees for the National Book Award prize in the fiction and nonfiction categories, respectively.

The longlists for the 2014 National Book Award were recently released.

The National Book Award is given out by the National Book Foundation in November. The shortlist for each category will be announced on Oct. 15 and author Daniel Handler (also known as writer Lemony Snicket) will be hosting the awards ceremony on Nov. 19. Last year鈥檚 National Book Award winners were 鈥淭he Good Lord Bird,鈥 by James McBride for the fiction category and 鈥淭he Unwinding,鈥 by George Packer for nonfiction, while 鈥淚ncarnadine,鈥 by Mary Szybist took the poetry prize and 鈥淭he Thing About Luck,鈥 by Cynthia Kadohata won the young people鈥檚 literature prize.

For nonfiction, the works that made the longlist were 鈥淐an鈥檛 We Talk About Something More Pleasant?鈥 by Roz Chast, "The Heathen School,鈥 by John Demos, 鈥No Good Men Among the Living,鈥 by Anand Gopal, "The Mantle of Command,鈥 by Nigel Hamilton, 鈥淭he Innovators,鈥 by Walter Isaacson, 鈥淭ennessee Williams: Mad Pilgrimage of the Flesh,鈥 by John Lahr, 鈥Age of Ambition,鈥 by Evan Osnos, 鈥淲hen Paris Went Dark,鈥 by Ronald C. Rosbottom,聽鈥淣ature's God,鈥 by Matthew Stewart, and 鈥淭he Meaning of Human Existence,鈥 by Edward O. Wilson.

For fiction, the works were 鈥An Unnecessary Woman,鈥 by Rabih Alameddine, 鈥淭he UnAmericans,鈥 by Molly Antopol, 鈥淲olf in White Van,鈥 by John Darnielle, 鈥All the Light We Cannot See,鈥 by Anthony Doerr, 鈥Redeployment,鈥 by Phil Klay, 鈥Station Eleven,鈥 by Emily St. John Mandel, 鈥淭hunderstruck & Other Stories,鈥 by Elizabeth McCracken, "Orfeo,鈥 by Richard Powers, 鈥淟ila,鈥 by Marilynne Robinson, and 鈥淪ome Luck,鈥 by Jane Smiley.聽

The books that could take the poetry prize are 鈥Roget's Illusion,鈥 by Linda Bierds, 鈥淎 Several World,鈥 by Brian Blanchfield, 鈥淔aithful and Virtuous Night,鈥 by Louise Gl眉ck, 鈥淕abriel: A Poem,鈥 by Edward Hirsch, 鈥淪econd Childhood,鈥 by Fanny Howe, 鈥淭his Blue,鈥 by Maureen N. McLane, 鈥淭he Feel Trio,鈥 by Fred Moten, 鈥淐itizen: An American Lyric,鈥 by Claudia Rankine, 鈥淭he Road to Emmaus,鈥 by Spencer Reece, and 鈥淐ollected Poems,鈥 by Mark Strand.聽

Meanwhile, those up for the young people鈥檚 literature award are 鈥淭he Impossible Knife of Memory,鈥 by Laurie Halse Anderson, 鈥淕irls Like Us,鈥 by Gail Giles, 鈥淪kink 鈥 No Surrender,鈥 by Carl Hiaasen, 鈥淕reenglass House,鈥 by Kate Milford, 鈥Threatened,鈥 by Eliot Schrefer, 鈥淭he Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights,鈥 by Steve Sheinkin, 鈥100 Sideways Miles,鈥 by Andrew Smith, 鈥淣oggin,鈥 by John Corey Whaley, 鈥淩evolution: The Sixties Trilogy, Book Two,鈥 by Deborah Wiles, and "Brown Girl Dreaming," by Jacqueline Woodson.
