How will the movie version of Gillian Flynn鈥檚 bestselling novel 鈥淕one Girl鈥 end?
Fans of the book know that the ending in the book is shocking. (You鈥檒l get no spoilers here.) And so readers were intrigued when the movie鈥檚 director David Fincher recounted actor Ben Affleck鈥檚 surprise over the ending of Flynn's script in an interview with . (In the movie, Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, who comes under suspicion when his wife Amy, portrayed by Rosamund Pike, disappears.)
鈥淗e would say, 鈥楾his is a whole new third act!鈥欌 Fincher remembered. 鈥溾橲he literally threw that third act out and started from scratch.鈥欌
However, it turns out the ending may not be so different after all. reporter Cara Buckley wrote in a recent article about the movie that she has seen the finished product and that the movie 鈥渉ews closely to the book.鈥 Flynn herself had participated in a Ask Me Anything session after Fincher made the 鈥渨hole new third act鈥 comment to EW.
鈥淭hose reports have been greatly exaggerated!鈥 Flynn wrote in response to a question about 鈥渃hanging the movie up a little when compared to the book.鈥 鈥淥f course, the script has to be different from the book in some ways 鈥 you have to find a way to externalize all those internal thoughts and you have to do more with less room and you just don't have room for everything. But the mood, tone and spirit of the book are very much intact.鈥
Fincher himself discussed his original comments in a later interview with , saying that what changes in the ending is 鈥渘othing and everything鈥 and that the revisions are 鈥渃hanging the bone structure and the muscles and the skin.鈥 He said he believes the film is 鈥渆xactly what I think Gillian always intended.鈥
