More has been revealed about the upcoming movie adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel 鈥淚nherent Vice.鈥
The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, and Reese Witherspoon and is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, who was nominated for the Best Director Oscar for his 2007 movie 鈥淭here Will Be Blood鈥 and nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on 鈥淏lood鈥 and for Best Original Screenplay for the 1997 movie 鈥Boogie Nights鈥 and the 1999 film 鈥Magnolia.鈥
鈥淰ice鈥 was first published in 2009 and follows an investigator named Larry Sportello (portrayed by Phoenix in the film), also known as Doc, who is drawn into the problems of real estate businessman Mickey Wolfmann, with whom his ex-girlfriend Shasta (Katherine Waterston) is romantically involved.
According to writer Kevin Jagernauth, those who have seen early screenings of the film have compared it to the movies 鈥The Big Lebowski鈥 and 鈥淭he Long Goodbye.鈥 Meanwhile, writer Chris Lee suggested 鈥淰ice鈥 could be one to watch for Oscars season, calling 鈥淰ice鈥 鈥渙ne of prestige season鈥檚 most befuddling and eagerly awaited titles.鈥
鈥淲ith Paul, he鈥檚 interested in what聽might聽happen, not what聽should聽happen,鈥 Waterston told EW of the filmmaking process. 鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 walk onto set with a clear goal. That can be 鈥 surprising. It didn鈥檛 feel chaotic; it felt thrilling. The set felt really vital. Like you are going into a question together.鈥
Meanwhile, Brolin confirmed to EW that the movie may have its odd moments.
鈥淎 piece of fruit plays a major role,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 frozen. And it鈥檚 my friend. Even talking about it now is making me chuckle.鈥
