Tony Awards 2014: 'A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder' and other literary adaptations take home prizes

A musical literary adaptation was one of the biggest winners at last night鈥檚 Tony Awards.
The musical 鈥淎 Gentleman鈥檚 Guide to Love and Murder,鈥 which follows a man who discovers he is actually the member of a family of aristocrats and decides to kill everyone in front of him in line to the earldom, won various prizes at the ceremony on June 8, including Best Musical, Best Director of a Musical for Darko Tresnjak, Best Book of a Musical for Robert L. Freedman, and Best Costume Design of a Musical for Linda Cho.聽
鈥淕entleman鈥 is based on the book 鈥Israel Rank: The Autobiography of a Criminal鈥 by Roy Horniman, which was first published in 1907. 鈥淩ank鈥 was also the basis for the 1949 critically acclaimed movie 鈥Kind Hearts and Coronets,鈥 which stars Alec Guinness.
The musical wasn鈥檛 the only literary-based production to take home Tonys. Actor Mark Rylance won the Best Featured Actor in a Play prize for a revival of the Shakespeare play 鈥淭welfth Night鈥 and the play also won for Best Costume Design of a Play. Meanwhile, the musical version of 鈥The Bridges of Madison County,鈥 based on the book by Robert James Waller, won the Best Score and Best Orchestrations prizes.
