Fans may be surprised by what 鈥淭he Fault in Our Stars鈥 author John Green says was the original ending to his young adult novel.
Green participated in an interview with the Ohio news channel WOIO, which was also conducted with 鈥淔ault鈥 star Nat Wolff. During the talk, Green discussed how he first concluded 鈥淔ault.鈥 He called the original ending 鈥渆pically terrible.鈥
鈥淪hould I even say?鈥 Green asked Wolff. 鈥淵ou know, don鈥檛 you? The not-good terrorist ending?鈥
Wolff鈥檚 eyes widened, and he said, 鈥淣o.鈥
(Spoilers for 鈥淔ault鈥 follow, so beware!)聽
According to Green, in that particular ending, protagonist Hazel and the writer Peter Van Houten, who had become friends with both Hazel and her now deceased boyfriend Augustus, 鈥渄ecide that they want to honor Augustus by finding a way to die in a sacrificial way that reflects something about who he was.鈥 So they make a plan to track down and kill a drug lord, despite the fact that they themselves will perish because of those protecting the drug lord. They then decide not to go through with the plan (鈥渁lmost,鈥 Green noted, 鈥渓ike I myself was thinking that maybe it would be a bad idea.鈥)
鈥淚鈥檓 not an expert or anything,鈥 Wolff deadpanned. 鈥淏ut I think I鈥檓 happy with the ending that you chose.鈥
Green said that he sent the original draft to his editor and she told him, 鈥淚 can鈥檛 tell if you鈥檙e kidding鈥 about the ending.
