'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them': Will Alfonso Cuaron direct?

At the moment, reports are conflicting. Former Deadline editor-in-chief tweeted that she 鈥渉ear[d] Alfonso Cuaron 鈥� deep in talks to direct JK Rowling's Harry Potter spinoff 'Fantastic Beasts.鈥欌��
However, writer Erin Strecker says the publication contacted Cuaron鈥檚 representatives and that they 鈥渒now nothing about the rumors,鈥� so the story is far from confirmed. However, Finke is often a trusted source 鈥� blogger Kevin Jagernauth noted that Finke鈥檚 鈥渢rack record speaks for itself.鈥�
However, Cuaron as director for the film (or entire franchise) would certainly be an interesting pick. He recently took the Best Director Oscar for his 2013 movie 鈥淕ravity鈥� and, while he only directed 鈥淎zkaban鈥� in the 鈥淧otter鈥� film series, the movie was a departure from the first two films in the series that were directed by 鈥淗ome Alone鈥� director Chris Columbus. While 鈥淗arry Potter and the Sorcerer鈥檚 Stone鈥� and 鈥淗arry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets鈥� received a lukewarm reception from critics (鈥溾�� holds a 64 score out of 100 on the review aggregator site Metacritic and 鈥溾�� has a 63), 鈥溾�� received many positive reviews, currently holding an 82 score on Metacritic. Monitor critic David Sterritt called Cuaron鈥檚 film 鈥渢he creepiest and scariest Potter picture yet 鈥� and to my mind, the best.鈥�
