New Shirley Jackson story is published

Author Shirley Jackson is often remembered for her short story 'The Lottery.'

A new story by author Shirley Jackson, often recognized for her creepy short story 鈥淭he Lottery,鈥 is appearing in The New Yorker.

Jackson鈥檚 story is titled 鈥淭he Man in the Woods鈥 and follows Christopher, who is strolling through a forest when he comes upon a house inhabited by a man and two women who take charge of the household for him.

鈥淚n 鈥楾he Man in the Woods鈥 she has created a story grounded in mythology, told like a fairy tale, with her typical hanging ending,鈥 Jackson鈥檚 son Jackson Hyman told . 鈥淭hough in this case the clues suggest pretty clearly how it will end.鈥

Hyman remembered how his mother would often be asked about the endings of her pieces.

鈥淪hirley always steadfastly refused to explain her fiction,鈥 he said. 鈥淪he would usually smile and tell people, 鈥業t鈥檚 just a story.鈥 She firmly believed that her books would speak for themselves.鈥

More previously unpublished work by Jackson is on the way 鈥 Random House is releasing a collection of Jackson鈥檚 work titled 鈥淕arlic in Fiction鈥 which is being edited by Hyman and another of Jackson鈥檚 children, Sarah Hyman DeWitt, according to the . The collection consists of work by the author from the Library of Congress and will include nonfiction, fiction, drawings, and lectures delivered by the writer.
