The film adaptation of J.K. Rowling鈥檚 鈥淔antastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,鈥 originally a fake textbook by Rowling based in Harry Potter鈥檚 world, will be a trilogy, according to Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara.
Tsujihara told the New York Times that the movie version of Rowling鈥檚 story, the screenplay for which is being written by the 鈥淧otter鈥 author, would consist of three parts.
鈥淔antastic鈥 was originally released in 2001 and the film trilogy will focus on the book鈥檚 fictional author, Newt Scamander. The story will be set in New York and will take place long before Harry arrives on the scene, with events unspooling 70 years before the 鈥淧otter鈥 series.
The New York Times gives Newt鈥檚 job title as 鈥渕agizoologist.鈥 When the film adaptation of 鈥淔antastic鈥 was announced, Warner Bros. said the story would focus on 鈥渢he adventures of the book鈥檚 fictitious author, Newt Scamander.鈥
A trilogy seems to be the default setting for both literary sci-fi and fantasy series as well as their film adaptations. The tradition, of course, goes all the way back to J.R.R. Tolkien鈥檚 鈥淭he Lord of the Rings鈥 series and recent young adult series that were written in trilogies include the 鈥淒ivergent鈥 series by Veronica Roth and the 鈥淗unger Games鈥 books by Suzanne Collins, though Collins鈥檚 last book is being split into two movies.
