'The Giver' trailer provides a glimpse into the film adaptation of the classic novel

A trailer for the film adaptation of Lois Lowry鈥檚 classic novel 鈥淭he Giver鈥 has been released.
The movie stars actor Brenton Thwaites, who is also starring in the 2014 film 鈥淢aleficent,鈥 as protagonist Jonas, who is chosen to become the new Receiver of Memories in his dystopian community. Under the tutelage of the current Receiver (Jeff Bridges), he experiences true feelings like happiness and pain for the first time.聽
鈥淎ugust: Osage County鈥 actress Meryl Streep portrays the Chief Elder of Jonas鈥檚 community, while 鈥淭rue Blood鈥 actor Alexander Skarsgard and Katie Holmes play his parents. Singer Taylor Swift is playing Rosemary, the daughter of the current Receiver.
鈥淔rom great suffering, great pain, came a solution,鈥 Streep鈥檚 character, the Chief Elder, says at the beginning of the trailer. 鈥淐ommunities where disorder became harmony.鈥
But the Giver tells Jonas, 鈥淭he way things look and the way things are are very different,鈥 while Jonas himself is beginning to question the community鈥檚 ways, asking, 鈥淲hat do you think would happen if you skipped your morning injection?鈥
Jonas receives the memories from the Giver in a rush, glimpsing images of birth, romance, and music.
Meanwhile, the Chief Elder says, 鈥淲hen people have the freedom to choose, they choose wrong.鈥
Not everyone is happy about the new trailer 鈥 an article from about the clip is titled 鈥溾橳he Giver鈥 trailer is here, and fans of the book collectively shudder.鈥澛
鈥淧erhaps unsurprisingly, it looks a lot like the many other young adult dystopias that have flooded our screens recently,鈥 Wire reporter David Sims wrote of the trailer. 鈥淎nyone who's read the book should feel a tremor of fear watching it.鈥
The movie will be released on Aug. 15.
