Lemony Snicket fans can now look forward to more tales set in the world of 鈥淎ll the Wrong Questions.鈥澛
Snicket published the second book in his 鈥淨uestions鈥 series 鈥 鈥淲hen Did You See Her Last鈥 鈥 earlier this month. Now he says that he will publish a short story collection this April (April 1, or April Fool鈥檚 Day, to be precise) titled 鈥淔ile Under 13: Suspicious Incidents,鈥 which will be a group of 13 shorter mysteries all set in the same universe as 鈥淨uestions.鈥
writer Sally Lodge asked Snicket if it was difficult to adapt to writing short stories after writing his novels.
鈥淚t is said that a novel is a love affair and a short story is a kiss in the dark from a stranger,鈥 Snicket (also known as writer Daniel Handler) told her. 鈥淚鈥檝e never been good at a kiss in the dark from a stranger, so as with hopeless romantics I stumbled a few times in my embraces.鈥澛
Graphic novelist Seth (also known as Gregory Gallant), illustrator of the earlier 鈥淨uestions鈥 books, will also be illustrating 鈥13.鈥
The 鈥淨uestions鈥 series, which began last year with the publication of the book 鈥淲ho Could That Be at This Hour?,鈥 shares a setting with Snicket鈥檚 bestselling 鈥淎 Series of Unfortunate Events鈥 books. The 鈥淯nfortunate Events鈥 series chronicles the adventures of the Baudelaire orphans, with Snicket, the narrator, hinting darkly at his own involvement throughout the story. The 鈥淨uestions鈥 series is a prequel to the 鈥淯nfortunate Events鈥 books and focuses on Snicket鈥檚 childhood.
Snicket says that two more books are planned for the 鈥淨uestions鈥 quartet.
When asked what inspired him to pen 鈥13,鈥 Snicket told Publishers Weekly that it was a combination of 鈥渁 lifelong appreciation of Donald J. Sobol [creator of the Encyclopedia Brown series] along with the sneaking suspicion that while the large boulders of treachery were rolling around Lemony Snicket in Stain鈥檇-By-The-Sea, there were dastardly pebbles rattling alongside.鈥
