The nature of director J.J. Abrams鈥 secretive project has been revealed 鈥 and it鈥檚 a book.
鈥淪tar Trek: Into Darkness鈥 director Abrams released a trailer titled 鈥淪tranger鈥 for an unknown project last month which included visuals of someone walking through water and a creepy image of a man with what looked like stitches over his mouth. The second clip, which has scenes of a man writing on a typewriter, ended with a link to a website, which revealed Abrams鈥 new endeavor: a book titled 鈥淪.,鈥 which Abrams created and which was written by author Doug Dorst. It鈥檚 due out from Little, Brown on Oct. 29.
The book has an unusual format, with objects such as a napkin with writing on it slipped into the pages of the novel. 鈥淪.鈥 follows two students named Eric and Jennifer who write messages to each other within the pages of a 1940s (fictional) novel.
鈥淚 could not be more excited for people to get their hands on this book,鈥 Abrams said in an interview with . 鈥淚t is difficult to describe because while it is a compelling mystery and love story, it is also much more than that. The work that everyone has done on S. is unlike anything I鈥檝e ever seen. Frankly, I鈥檓 amazed it was even possible to do this project at all.鈥澛
Dorst is also the author of the novel 鈥淎live in Necropolis鈥 and the short story collection 鈥淭he Surf Guru.鈥
Abrams recently made headlines when it was announced he would be helming the new 鈥淪tar Wars鈥 film. He has also directed movies including 鈥Super 8鈥 and co-created the ABC show 鈥淟ost.鈥澛
