The first trailer for the film 鈥淪aving Mr. Banks,鈥 which follows the story of how P.L. Travers鈥 children鈥檚 novel 鈥淢ary Poppins鈥 became a Disney film, was recently released.
The movie stars Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as Travers, who is wary of Disney and his production team鈥檚 wishes to turn her beloved book into a movie.
The trailer shows Thompson traveling to Los Angeles to meet with Hanks and his company about the possible film. As seen in the trailer, Travers apparently had no patience for those who didn鈥檛 get her creation right.
鈥淚ntroducing the creator of our beloved Mary,鈥 Disney writer Don DaGradi (Bradley Whitford), who would pen the screenplay for 鈥淧oppins,鈥 announces as she arrives.
鈥淧oppins,鈥 Thompson corrects him. 鈥淣ever, ever just Mary.鈥
She also was wary of the movie getting the Disney treatment (鈥淚 know what he鈥檚 going to do to her,鈥 Thompson says during the trailer. 鈥淪he鈥檒l be cavorting and winking鈥) and impatient of Disney-like cuteness.
鈥淩esponstible is not a word!鈥 Thompson snaps at the Sherman brothers (Jason Schwartzman plays Richard and B.J. Novak plays Robert), who composed the music.
鈥淲e made it up,鈥 Schwartzman tells her.
鈥淲ell, unmake it up,鈥 she says with finality, causing him to hide the sheet music for 鈥淪upercalifragilisticexpialidocious.鈥
But the most important sticking point, according to the movie, was Disney鈥檚 misguided idea (at first) of what the story was really about.
鈥淵ou think Mary Poppins has come to save the children?鈥 Thompson asks Hanks. 鈥淥h, dear.鈥澛
Other cast members include Colin Farrell as Travers鈥 father, 鈥淗ow Sweet It Is鈥 actress Victoria Summer as Julie Andrews, 鈥淭he Fighter鈥 actress Dendrie Taylor as Disney鈥檚 wife Lillian, and Paul Giamatti as Ralph, who meets Thompson at the airport in the movie鈥檚 trailer.
