The 'Goodfellas' star is said to be producing 鈥淭ruth and Consequences: Life Inside the Madoff Family鈥� for HBO 鈥� and perhaps starring as Bernie Madoff, the man who defrauded investors of billions.

Robert De Niro may be starring in an HBO adaptation of the story of the Madoff family, playing Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff.

The story of Bernie Madoff continues to dominate the entertainment world: HBO has optioned the book 鈥淭ruth and Consequences: Life Inside the Madoff Family鈥� by Laurie Sandell as source material for a movie about the Madoffs, with Robert De Niro possibly starring as the Madoff patriarch who bilked investors of thousands through a Ponzi scheme.聽

The film will be produced by De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, his partner in his company Tribeca Productions. The book 鈥淭he Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust鈥� by Diane Henriques will also serve as source material for the film, according to . Sandell鈥檚 book was written with cooperation from Bernie Madoff鈥檚 wife Ruth and his surviving son Andrew.

鈥淩eservation Road鈥� writer John Burnham Schwartz is signed on to write the screenplay for the HBO movie.
