Guest blog: "Twilight" moves into "Nightlight"
Cult-wise, now we know the Twilight books have really arrived. No, we鈥檙e not talking about author Stephenie Meyer鈥檚 appearance on Oprah, or about the 鈥Twilight Series鈥 coffee beans offered by one enterprising company in brews like 鈥淏ella鈥檚 Blend鈥. The news that caught us is hearing that Harvard Lampoon has issued a parody of the book, titled 鈥淣ightlight鈥.
The reported that the book鈥檚 154 pages about 鈥淏elle Goose鈥 and 鈥淓dwart鈥 follow the Twilight template, 鈥渂ut change every detail, from the glossy black cover with a chewed-to-the core apple to the come-hither copy on the back jacket, which reads: 'About three things I was absolutely certain. First, Edwart was most likely my soul mate, maybe.' "
The Lampoon book of my generation 鈥 or, actually, my parents鈥 generation, the books aren鈥檛 issued that frequently 鈥 was 鈥淏ored of the Rings,鈥 a sendup of J.R.R. Tolkien鈥檚 classic trilogy. As a young adult and a dedicated Tolkien fan (how I coveted my brother鈥檚 鈥淔rodo Lives鈥 shirt!), I found it rude, crude, and hilarious. The mere fact someone else had read the chronicles carefully enough to mock them so intimately mattered more than the actual quality; it all felt like one fabulous inside joke.
As an adult, I reread 鈥淏ored,鈥 and found its dorky, smutty humor no longer appealed to me in the least. I鈥檝e never lost my enraptured love for 鈥Lord of the Rings,鈥 though. I wonder how today鈥檚 Twilight fans will feel about both the original 鈥 and the parody 鈥 another 20 years down the line.
