The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we鈥檝e aimed 鈥渢o injure no man, but to bless all mankind,鈥� as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

A Single Pebble by John Hersey portrays ancient life along the Yangtze River.聽 A young American engineer travels against the river's swift currents aboard a junk pulled by trackers who trudge together on paths along the bank.聽 Today's freighter cargo ships, 3-Gorges Dam electrical output, and relocation of rural and river-town populations are a striking contrast.聽 Much is now submerged 鈥� but hopefully the spirit of Hersey's characters will remain.
