The Late Homecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir by Kao Kalia Yang was enlightening for me. I felt all the sorrow and heartbreak that Kao and her family went through to arrive, finally, in America. I admire the tenacity and courage of this family and all other Hmong families. When I was a third-grade teacher, I had Hmong students. Now I understand infinitely better why their parents were always encouraging them to excel.
