10 best books of September: the Monitor's picks

Of the many excellent books coming our way this fall, here are 10 September releases that the Monitor's book critics particularly enjoyed.

4. "The Lost Landscape," by Joyce Carol Oates

Iconic author Joyce Carol Oates writes movingly and with warmth about her childhood spent on a farm in rural western New York state. Oates recalls herself as a shy and sensitive child drawn young to literary pleasures. She paints a tender, admiring portrait of her parents and also writes lovingly of a red hen with whom she had a particular bond. You can read the Monitor's full review of "The Lost Landscape" here.
