This book provides a powerful and uncompromising account of the atomic bomb and the enduring impact of nuclear war. Told through the eyes of individual hibakusha (鈥渂omb-affected people鈥), Southard's work researches the physical, psychological, and social challenges that resulted in a post-atomic world. This gripping piece is written tastefully, but Southard holds nothing back and is highly critical of the denial that colored much of what was reported about the bombing both in the United States and Japan.
