5. Some Romany boys learned a trade early on

When Walsh was almost 12 years old, it was decided that he was of age to learn a trade, and so he was taught re-surfacing driveways, which was his father's area of expertise. His father would give orders and Walsh would carry out the work. Walsh says his father cheated many customers and over-charged them. "I was expected to know how to do everything," he writes. "There was no room or time for mistakes. We had to get the job done and be gone as soon as we could."
