Walsh writes that by Romany Gypsy tradition at least one person sings at every gathering and that each person had a specific number they would usually perform if asked. Songs by Matthew Docherty or Slim Whitman were the big picks among the men, Walsh says. "A party was never complete without at least five women knocking out a pitch-perfect Patsy Cline hit," Walsh writes. Often at the end of celebrations, Walsh and his sister Frankie would sing "Show Me the Way to Go Home," which would be a signal that the evening was over.
