Banned Books Week: Why these 10 classics got kicked out of class

Is this is a roundup of objectionable literature 鈥 or a Great Books roster? The same titles that some call great literature others find to be filthy, bad, or dangerous. Here are a handful of the often surprising 鈥 and sometimes downright baffling 鈥 reasons that objectors around the world wanted to ban these books.

1. The Catcher in the Rye

J.D. Salinger's classic coming-of-age story "The Catcher in the Rye" was removed by a school in Summerville, S.C., in 2001 because it "is a filthy, filthy book."

All information in this roundup comes from the American Library Association.
