The 20th 鈥淚nspector Rebus鈥 mystery, 鈥淓ven Dogs in the Wild,鈥 is newly released, making this a good time to hear the series from the start, beginning with 鈥淜nots and Crosses.鈥 Scottish detective John Rebus, a flawed but very bright former military specialist, is investigating the disappearance of two girls in Edinburgh. The story can be gritty and the language raw, but Rebus has a moral center that is admirable. Unfortunately, narrator Michael Page is occasionally over the top.   Grade: B-
