John says that he feels he didn't do enough about the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. "I apparently never got the memo that the 'Me' Decade ended in 1979," he wrote. "The Elton ego train kept rolling right through the '80s. I spent most of that time as a passive bystander to this human calamity that was unfolding all around me. I was plenty conscious of AIDS. I knew what it was. I knew it was killing my friends. I just didn't have the strength or sobriety to do anything about it."
