Overview
Ǵ’s founder, Mary Baker Eddy, created The Home Forum to appeal to “the heart of the family circle.” In many developed countries today, households without children now outnumber those with children, fostering a search for kinship beyond nuclear or extended families. Modern communications and international migration have drawn the global family together in new ways. The Home Forum aims for a broad expression of home, an idea our founder described as including friendship, love, and pure humanity.
The Home Forum offers a haven in which to anchor readers amid the currents of daily news. We strive to stay abreast of the times by tracking important trends in thought, particularly those that relate to, affect, and support home and home life.
Essays and poems
We invite you to submit essays and poems that bring a higher tone, such as those that are ethical or educational. We particularly welcome wit, humor, and vivacity. We don’t publish work presenting people in helpless or hopeless states, or deal with topics of death, aging, medicine, or disease. In coming months we will be expanding our offerings to include, among other things, content created for and by young people.
All material must be original and previously unpublished. For time-sensitive material (seasonal, news-related, holiday- or event-themed), you must submit at least six weeks in advance. We do not accept AI-generated stories. Please see our AI Policy.
Some examples:
- Growing in the dark
- “I Was 3 for 10”: Why his favorite coach wasn’t a coach at all, but his eighth grade math teacher
- The mystery of knitting ... remains a mystery
How to pitch and follow up
Send us your submission in the form of a Google Doc or text pasted into an email, with the word count listed at the top of the page. No links or hard copies, please. Submit finished work only – no outlines or proposals – to homeforum@csmonitor.com. Type “Submission” with a title of the essay or poem into the subject field of your email. You will receive an acknowledgment via autoreply. Note: If your email account has a spam filter and you have not added Home Forum to your authorized list of senders, you may need to check your spam folder.
We ask for four weeks to consider a submission exclusively, starting with the date you receive an autoreply acknowledgment (see above). We respond with acceptances ONLY. If after four weeks you have not received an acceptance via email, you can conclude that you are free to submit your manuscript elsewhere.
Payment
We pay $400 for an essay, and $200 for poetry submissions, upon publication. The preferred method of remuneration is via bank transfer. We will provide digital forms for you to complete upon our acceptance of a piece.
Please note
Be sure to include your contact information (email and phone), and a word count with your submission. Please do not contact the editor via their personal email account, as this will delay or derail consideration of your submission.
We are unable to accept:
- telephone queries
- hard copies
- simultaneous submissions
- previously published material
- AI-generated stories – please see our AI Policy for more details
- articles that result from a press trip, free lodging or meals, etc.
Happy writing! We look forward to working with you!
