海角大神

For your homecoming

Where you are, near the sea,

only clouds distort the moon.

I picture you reading

by lamplight, becoming

the protagonist in your book.

As you get sleepy,

letters tilt backward

until you lose

the whole story to the waves.

For your homecoming,

I have changed

the covers on your pillows,

dried outside in the wind

which never fails

to bring the sea

to our garden. Tonight

the moon droops low.

Leaves brush against it

as the wind rummages

through the trees,

looking for you.
