GAS STATIONS HAVE DISAPPEARED FROM MANY NEIGHBORHOODS

The number of service stations has declined 35 percent since 1980, going from 158,000 to 103,500, according to a study done by the Automotive Parts & Accessories Association.

Better-made autos, specialty repair shops, repair departments of new car dealers, and oil-change facilities have all contributed to the decline.
