Israeli coalition survives no-confidence test vote
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir's nine-day-old coalition government survived a vote of confidence Wednesday over its handling of the inflation-racked economy. The coalition defeated the opposition's motion in the parliament by a vote of 61 to 54. The opposition charged that Israel had become a desperate welfare case dependent on the United States. New Finance Minister Yigal Cohen-Orgad promised that the government would solve the economic turmoil through austerity.
